Understanding ADHD

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder or ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that impacts cognitive and executive function. Many people who have ADHD or experience symptoms of ADHD may struggle with tasks that are part of daily life such as planning, decision making, organization, time management, and attention.

These experiences may also be associated with other mental health conditions, so meeting with a mental health professional can help clarify whether ADHD is a contributing factor.

Short-Term Behavioral Support

To help students better understand and manage symptoms that may be affecting their  academic, social, or personal functioning. Treatment may focus on developing practical skills related to organization, time management, planning, prioritization, study habits, emotional regulation, and other challenges commonly associated with ADHD

Diagnostic Assessment

Includes a diagnostic interview, during which a clinician gathers information about current concerns, symptom history, academic functioning, and mental health. Assessment will also involve the use of objective and subjective testing measures, such as questionnaires, rating scales, and computerized assessments, to better understand symptoms and determine appropriate diagnoses

Care Continuity & Medication Management

New to ADHD Stimulant Medication Treatment

  • If you have never been prescribed ADHD medication, or if you have not had an active ADHD medication prescription within the past 12 months, present at the Drop-In service or schedule an appointment with Counseling.

Transferring ADHD Stimulant Medication Care

  • If you are currently prescribed ADHD medication or have received a prescription within the past 12 months, please have your current provider complete the Transfer of Care form. Once completed, we ask you upload the form and any additional supporting documentation (e.g. previous medical records, Neuropsychological Testing results, etc.) to Box for clinical review. Box is a secure cloud-based content management and file sharing platform. Please use these Instructions to Upload and Share Your Transfer of Care Form in Box.
    • Please allow 7-10 business days for review after all required documentation has been received. It is your responsibility to ensure that all requested records are submitted. We are unable to obtain documentation directly from your provider(s).

Next Steps

  • If the documentation supports ongoing ADHD medication treatment, you will be contacted to schedule an in-person appointment with a provider at Student Health and Counseling for medication management.
  • If additional information is needed to determine the most appropriate treatment plan, you will be contacted to schedule an appointment with a mental health professional for further assessment and support.
Referral Services

While Student Health and Counseling provides short-term treatment, students who require long-term, ongoing therapy for ADHD management may be referred to community providers once their care is stabilized. Referrals may also be made for comprehensive neuropsychological testing when a more in-depth evaluation is clinically indicated.

Academic Accommodations Documentation

Academic accommodations are coordinated and approved through the Weingarten Center. Your mental health clinician at Student Health and Counseling can support your wellbeing throughout the accommodation process, including discussing your needs, providing guidance on available resources, and completing documentation when clinically appropriate.
