Dr. Raymond A. Cattaneo, a seasoned leader in pediatric care, academic medicine, and student wellness, has been named the new Medical Director of Student Health and Counseling, part of Wellness at Penn at the University of Pennsylvania, beginning in September 2025.
Dr. Cattaneo brings over 15 years of clinical and administrative experience to this role, including his most recent position as Program Director of the Pediatric Residency at Jefferson Einstein Hospital in Philadelphia, where he oversaw resident training, faculty development, and recruitment while also mentoring emerging physicians.
“We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Cattaneo to the Wellness team,” says Dr. Benoit Dubé, Associate Provost and Chief Wellness Officer. “His experience as a clinician and educator uniquely positions him to lead our medical care team with compassion, innovation, and a strong commitment to student-centered care.”
Dr. Cattaneo is deeply committed to building systems that foster belonging and justice in healthcare, particularly in support of historically marginalized communities, and has worked to advance affirming care for LGBTQ+ patients and students throughout his career.
Prior to his work at Jefferson Einstein, he was a senior partner at Priority Care Pediatrics, one of the largest private pediatric practices in Kansas City, Missouri. Over nearly two decades, he helped grow the organization from a small team of four physicians into a multi-specialty practice with over 75 staff members across three locations, offering comprehensive care in areas such as mental health, lactation, and nutrition.
He also served as Assistant Dean at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine, where he led student affairs for over 200 medical students during their foundational years. A board-certified pediatrician, he earned his medical degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine and a master’s degree in public health from the University of Kansas. In his new role, he will lead clinical operations and strategic initiatives spanning primary care, acute care, sexual and gender-affirming health, travel medicine, and more. He will also support accreditation efforts, quality improvement, and clinical staff development.
“This opportunity feels deeply aligned with both my professional values and personal mission,” says Dr. Cattaneo. “I’m inspired by the University’s commitment to holistic student health, and I look forward to collaborating with the incredible staff at Wellness at Penn to foster wellness, community, and care in every corner of campus.”
Dr. Patricia Ruiz, Executive Director of Student Health and Counseling, adds, “Dr. Cattaneo’s background in inclusive care and his passion for innovation will strengthen our commitment to meeting the evolving needs of Penn students. We are excited to welcome a leader who brings both clinical excellence and a deep dedication to equity and belonging.”
